The death of Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad, Emir of Kuwait since 2006, had left the nation sorrowful as it prepared for a final farewell.

A week after his death, a new Emir was appointed namely Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al Sabah, who announced Sheikh Meshal Al Ahmad Al Sabah to be the new Crown Prince of Kuwait.

Sheikh Meshal, an octogenarian, has been the deputy chief of the National Guard since 2004. Having studied at the Britain’s Hendon Police College, he was credited with extensive law reforms in the country and helped transform Kuwait’s National Guard.

He worked closely with Sheikh Sabah , often accompanying him on official diplomatic visits. He also went as far as being one of the closest people to him during his stay at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where the emir received medical treatment after surgery and later died last week.

The selection of Sheikh Meshal, which must be approved by parliament, “was blessed by the Al Sabah family”, Kuna said, quoting a statement from the emir’s office.
