The developers of Among Us – a massively popular multiplayer online murder mystery game that has rapidly become one of the most popular multiplayer games of the year, are facing a particularly destructive spam attack. Yesterday, players started experiencing the “Eris Loris” spam in their online matches. InnerSloth said it was “super duper aware of the current hacking issue” and pushed out an emergency server update to try to address it starting last night.
The game which gained popularity during the pandemic this summer, grabbed more headlines recently following a hugely successful Twitch stream from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to encourage voting in the upcoming US election.
The spam attack is said to have begun on Thursday when players discovered that their in-game chat logs were filling up with messages promoting the Eris Loris YouTube channel. It appears that the end goal of the attack is to promote the Eris Loris YouTube channel, which advertises hacks and other game cheating services. According to the hackers, the spam attack is likely to have hit as many as 1.5 million games, affecting close to 5 million players.
According to InnerSloth developer Forest Willard, the emergency server update was rolled out last night but it’s unclear if the issue has since been resolved or whether InnerSloth is planning more maintenance updates to address it. Players on Twitter, however continued reporting Eris Loris-related spam in the game.
